Seaweed Cultivation

Seaweed Cultivation is Necessary for India...?

  • Seaweed mariculture is a significant and profitable livelihood for coastal fishing community especially for fisher women, who with the little effort can earn a substantial income for the household.
  • There are only few seaweeds based industries, but not functioning up to their rated capacity as there has been short supply of raw material.
  • The exploitation of seaweed from natural beds has been traditionally carried out along the south eastern coast for industrial processing of biomass for Agar, Agarose, Carrageenan and Alginate; however continuous indiscriminate and unrecognised harvesting has resulted into depletion of natural recourses.
  • Helpful to fight against climatic conditions. It is helpful in carbon sequestration; it absorbs co2 from the atmosphere.
  • Apart from its Socio-economic Value Seaweed Cultivation growth of the seaweed aquaculture industry is good for the economy and good for the ocean. The process of growing seaweed is environmental friendly. Apart from planting the seeds and ensuring the seaweed is in a clean environment, seaweed often does not need feed or additional attention. Open ocean seaweed farms can even improve water quality.
  • More than 90% of seaweed based industries of our country is rely on imported biomass and final product made from seaweed. Thus by promoting seaweed cultivation at domestic level can also help rupees devaluation from import.
  • Seaweed Specie Gracilaria Dura which is native seaweed found in the Gujarat coastline. It is very important seaweed due to its commercial usefulness and application. The cultivation of this seaweed on large scale is not possible due to non availability of seed material. We should promote the cultivation for such seaweed.

Benefit of Seaweed Cultivation activity

01 | Coastal Community

Our idea or project is a socio-economic activity. The main beneficiaries are the coastal people and fisher community. As we discussed earlier, cultivation will take place in inter sub title zone of sea, for this kind of work the most suitable people shall be the fisher community only, who are aware about the sea and its nature very well. Seaweed cultivation shall be an additional activity for earning extra income irrespective of their regular fishing activity.

02 | Use of raw material for production and processing

While doing cultivation we will be able to sell the seaweed as a raw material to the existing industries as well as for our own processing unit. There are many other industry segments which are using seaweed as its ingredient or as a raw material for their product. The demand for seaweed raw material is increasing with its growing popularity in the industries at large, specifically Indian industries are getting aware about the usefulness of this wonder plant.

03 | Seaweed based industry

Our aim is to develop this activity in every suitable site of Gujarat and at pan India level so that our nation can be self-sufficient "ATMA NIRBHAR" on imported raw material. By our activity the third beneficiary will be the domestic seaweed-based industry who can purchase best quality of raw material from the domestic market.

04 | Benefits to the Environment

Apart from planting the seeds and ensuring the seaweed is in a clean environment, seaweed often does not need feed or additional attention. Open ocean seaweed farms can even improve water quality. Many of the dangers the ocean faces today, specifically ocean acidification, can be mitigated by increasing the amount of seaweed grown. According to World Bank predicts that rising carbon dioxide levels, the leading cause of ocean acidification, can also be mitigated through seaweed. Seaweed has an amazing carbon dioxide uptake and storage.
